SIIA Applauds Senator Hatch, Coons on Introduction of International Communications Privacy Act

WASHINGTON, D.C.
(July 27, 2017) The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) today applauded Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Chris Coons (D-DE) for introducing bill S. 1671 - the International Communications Privacy Act (ICPA) ICPA reinforces that U.S. law enforcement must attain a warrant for any electronic content for U.S. persons and settles uncertainty around obtaining such information for foreign nationals.

Mark MacCarthy, SIIA Senior Vice President of Public Policy, issued the following statement:

“U.S. technology companies are global leaders in providing cloud computing services for users around the world. This innovation is a critical underpinning of the 21st Century U.S. economy and job growth.  However, technology companies are threatened by the current legal framework that creates conflicting national requirements for cloud service providers to turn over customers’ data.  At the same time, law enforcement efforts in the U.S. and around the world are increasingly frustrated by difficulties in accessing data located across borders.

“SIIA supports ICPA because it would modernize our outdated privacy laws that were created before the digital age to more accurately reflect today’s technological realities.  With increasing consumer and business reliance on cloud-computing, it is crucial that users enjoy trust in these systems, and that companies can comply with lawful requests for information.

“Today SIIA joined with a group of industry groups thanking Senators Hatch and Coons for their leadership on this critical issue.  We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to consider this critical legislation after the August recess."
