SIIA Congratulates Rep. Yoder and House Appropriations Committee for Unanimous Passage of Critical Email Privacy Amendment

The House Appropriations Committee yesterday unanimously approved an amendment by Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KY) that requires the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other agencies of jurisdiction to obtain a warrant to access the content of email and stored communications held by 3rd parties.  This amendment is now a part of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill for FY2018.

SIIA’s Senior Vice President for Public Policy, Mark MacCarthy, issued the following statement.

“This amendment levels the playing field for access to remotely stored communications, which is a critical part of the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 387) that was unanimously passed by the House earlier this year.  There is a serious need to protect email and other private communications from agency overreach.  Congratulations to Rep. Yoder and the Appropriations Committee for their leadership on this issue.  We’re delighted the Appropriations Committee agrees on this important issue, and we urge the Senate to follow their footsteps on both fronts.”
SIIA posted this blog on July 13 in support of the amendment.
