SIIA Supports the Defend Trade Secrets Act, the First Federal Civil Remedy for Trade Secret Theft

Washington, D.C. (April 4, 2016) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association representing the software and digital content industries, today applauded the Senate for passing by an overwhelming margin S. 1890, the Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016 (“DTSA”).

Mark MacCarthy, SIIA’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy, issued the following statement:

“SIIA has long supported the Defend Trade Secrets Act, important legislation that will modernize intellectual property laws. Currently, there is no civil federal course of action for plaintiffs to file claims of trade secret theft, and the level of state protection varies.

“DTSA provides a uniform, federal civil remedy to trade secret theft, making it easier for American companies to protect their intellectual property across state lines. SIIA thanks Senator Hatch and the Senate Judiciary Committee for all of their efforts and looks forward to working with the House to pass this bipartisan legislation.”
