Top AM&P Annual Meeting Sessions Back for an Encore

Share |

The AM&P 2019 Annual Meeting was so packed with rock star presenters and stellar content, we knew we had to provide an encore.

On January 10, 2020, eight of the most popular and energizing annual meeting sessions will return to the stage at the American Bar Association, Chicago. If you couldn’t make it to AMP 360 in June; you were there, but were in another great session; or you just want to see one of your favorites again, here’s your chance.

For a little backstage peek into the Encore, we spoke to Christopher Okenka, secretary of AM&P and director of brand and creative for Turnaround Management Association.

Sidebar: Let’s start at the beginning. How did the idea for an encore presentation come about?

Okenka: After expanding the annual meeting’s educational offerings over the past 2 years, we realized we had so many great options for our members and attendees, but it was nearly impossible for them to attend everything across the different content tracks and practical or strategic categories.

We really wanted to offer something for everyone, so that meant showcasing the very best and giving our speakers another opportunity to share their wealth of knowledge with others. Chicago was a great choice to take these sessions “on the road” since many association professionals and their industry service partners are located in the Midwest and the greater Chicagoland area.

Sidebar: How were the presentations selected?

Okenka: We tried to strike a smart balance between highly-ranked sessions based on the post-conference survey, sessions and speakers with a Midwest connection, and session topics that could really energize publishing and communications teams as a whole with practical takeaways.

Sidebar: You mentioned the Midwest a couple times and the Encore will be in Chicago. Why is that important?

Okenka: The number of Midwest speakers that applied to be part of the Annual Meeting was impressive, and it was clear that we needed to energize that part of our member base.

It is important to know that AM&P members thrive and work not only in the DC metro area, but in other association hubs such as Chicago and New York. Take a look at the submitted EXCEL entries and you will see that associations are everywhere. We are focused on going where our members are and bringing value to them.

We need to bring the content to the content creators. We need to make networking easy, and this is a great way to expand your professional network and learn something new along the way.

Sidebar: What do you hope people take away from the Encore?

Okenka: I really hope people can implement some new tactics and strategies at their own associations; but more than anything, I really want people to leave with a sense of connection and camaraderie from meeting other AM&P members.

Sidebar: AM&P is launching several new initiatives, such as a new membership category and a new Innovation Committee. How does this event fit in with those endeavors?

Okenka: A big part of the membership committee’s work is evaluating how we can show value in new ways. The AM&P Annual Meeting Encore is a great way to show value by engaging volunteers, offering new networking opportunities, and by sharing knowledge amongst friends and colleagues. There is great power in our passionate network, and no better way to show this than through the energy that radiates from our events.

Also, we would love to show the freelancers and sole-proprietors out there that we have a home for you, and that home is AM&P. Everyone has so much to share and learn, so the more we all get involved, the better.

Of course, none of this could have been accomplished without the dedication and expertise of the 2019 Annual Meeting Committee, and I urge everyone to take some time and review the volunteer opportunities with AM&P.
