Expand your pool of freelance writers for your membership association publications and products at a “speed networking” event in New York City in April.
At the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) conference each spring, ASJA offers an event called Client Connections. With a format similar to speed dating, the event allows ASJA members to meet with editors and content directors in fast nine-minute interviews. ASJA is a national association for freelance journalists and non-fiction authors. Writers must apply to be members, so only talented, working full-time freelance writers may join the organization and participate in Client Connections. (AM&P exhibited at the ASJA DC Writers Conference in November to promote our new freelance membership category. In addition, a few AM&P members participated in that Client Connections.)
ASJA is actively recruiting membership association editors—and other association staffers who hire freelance writers—to participate in this event. It’s free for editors and provides an opportunity to meet up to 15 writers in one afternoon. Editors are invited to stay after the event for a reception, where they can meet more writers and other editors. There is no obligation to hire any of the writers. ASJA asks only that you bring business cards and an open mind.
Editors must register for the event by March 30. When you register, tell ASJA what skills you are looking for and some information about your association, including the range of fees that you pay writers. This is the best way to ensure that you meet only with writers who have the expertise you need.
If you are based in the Washington, D.C., area, or elsewhere on the East Coast, remember that New York City is often an inexpensive train ride away; the event timing means you can complete the trip in a day, without the expense of a hotel room.
