SaaShr Mobile Strategy Challenge

By Bill Loss, CEO, WebApps, Inc. a.k.a. SaaShr.com

Delivering Human Capital Management solutions under a SaaS model to the SMB market, we’ve recently stepped up our mobile strategy as a result of the competitive landscape. One interesting aspect to the mobile strategy challenge is the software industry is lumping “mobile” into one bucket, but from our perspective there are really two distinct buckets – the smart phone and the tablet. Given the inherent differences in screen real estate, decisions around the volume of data and number and complexity of functions allowed can greatly impact development efforts.

Equally challenging, is the decision to go browser-based or leverage a fat client architecture where code resides on the device itself. In the case of Android, we understand it’s easier to load apps directly to the app store as a result of a more limited verification process, so a fat client architecture might be preferred. In the case of iOS, frequent update cycles appear to be more difficult because in some cases we’ve heard it could take months to get the latest version of an app approved. Additionally, from an architectural perspective, we believe Apple restricts dynamic communication between the server and the device itself, in that some core functions which are better off residing on the server side may very well need to be coded on the fat client. These limitations can add complexity to an organization’s mobile strategy and may create a tug-of-war between whether fat client or browser-based is a better longer-term direction.

For many organizations, including ours, these are just some of the device/platform challenges which can potentially impact app compatibility and acceptance within the marketplace. With the goal of minimizing our internal R&D investment, events like All About Mobile help assist in identifying the appropriate subset of core functionality to deploy, when, and to what device and/or platform.

Mobile Town Hall Meeting: Notes

During last week’s All About the Cloud conference, discussion focused, of course, on the evolution of the cloud as a core business strategy. But there was one particular conversation that went in another direction.

A group of industry executives sat down to have a conversation about the challenges of evolving into the mobile applications and services market. Why? SIIA has been exploring how to reach out to companies that focus exclusively in mobile applications or that are evolving into it. In fact, the Software Division of SIIA is actually generating new projects as we speak in order to address growing needs.

While no answers came out of the discussion, there was clearly a need for continuing the discussion. View the Mobile Town Hall flip chart notes below.

174 Million Reasons to Get Involved in SIIA Mobile Software Committee

Written by Jim Szafranski, Fiberlink

You probably can guess what that large number refers to? It’s smartphone shipments in 2009. In a way, it’s hard to get one’s mind around this and how to tap that market. Personally, I find it easier to think about the growth of this market, which was 40% quarter-over-quarter in the fourth quarter of 2009. That’s a lot of new devices getting into users and businesses hands. It’s nearly impossible to find a market that is this large and growing at such fast rate.

So, that’s why the SIIA is launching a Mobile Software Committee with the initial mission statement of:

The SIIA Mobile Software Committee was formed to address the business issues of software companies entering and growing in the mobile marketplace. The explosion in mobile platforms has profound implications on how software and services should be delivered. The committee’s mission is to guide businesses in building & delivering apps, managing & measuring their infrastructure, and demystifying the process of selling through carriers & app stores.

The cloud has been driving a lot of innovation and growth in the software business. I think it’s safe to say that mobile will be on par or bigger in both driving innovation and growth throughout the software industry.

Some of the ideas behind this SIIA initiative include:

  • Helping each other navigate the myriad of mobile device platforms
  • Sharing best practices of selling into the mobile space
  • Discussing how “consumerization” impacts technology and business
  • Creating a strong network of members interested in and committed to mobile
  • And, this group can evolve the SIIA platform into other ideas such as enterprise issues of mobile, consumer markets, app store developers, and more.

So, help shape this market and grow with it by getting involved here early at the SIIA. There will be a town hall breakfast meeting at All About the Cloud on Wednesday, May 12 to discuss the Future of Mobile. Please join us.
