CATEGORIES

The 2003 Codie Awards categories were selected based on input from SIIA member companies and previous nominees. The 40 categories reflect the diverse range of products, services and overall corporate achievement and philanthropic efforts throughout the software and information industry.

Use the links below to find the categories best suited for your company and products. Each category includes a description of the kinds of products and services that are to be nominated. Corporate Achievement Award
Awards a business or corporation that enhances the development and embodies the vision of the software and information industry.
  • This award is for a company or corporation, not for an individual.
  • Nominees must include a detailed description of the nominated company's contribution(s) to the software and information industry and a one-page company biography.
  • The winning company will be selected by a special SIIA steering committee.
  • Special nomination form required.

Corporate Newcomer of the Year
Awards an innovative company that provides strong current or future financial returns and demonstrates rapid business expansion via a unique business strategy within the software and information industry.

  • This award is for a company or a corporation, not for an individual.
  • The nominated company must have been incorporated for no more than 3 years (between Jan. 1, 1999 through Jan. 1, 2002).
  • The nominated company must be able to show specific organizational development.
  • The nominated company cannot be a division, subsidiary or joint venture with a larger entity.
  • The winning company will be selected by a special SIIA steering committee.
  • Special nomination form required.

Excellence in Giving Award
No nomination fee. SIIA members only.
Recognizes software and information companies' philanthropic commitment to communities as demonstrated by their product giving programs.

  • This award is co-sponsored by Gifts In Kind International.
  • This award is for a company or corporation, not for an individual.
  • Nominees are reviewed based on the product giving program's impact on a cause/issue.
  • Award based on total dollar value of product contributions as a percentage of pretax profit and continuity of company's product giving program.
  • The winning company will be selected by a panel of corporate philanthropy experts designated by Gifts In Kind International.
  • Special nomination form required. Nominees must be SIIA members, no entry fee required.

Best Application Service Solution
Awards the infrastructure, technology or web hosting platform that best enables software as a service or a hosted application. Includes xSPs with proprietary distribution solutions and service-enabling solutions.

Best Business Productivity Product or Service
Awards the best product or service designed to enhance efficiency across a wide range of business types. Includes products such as contact managers, graphic/design programs, marketing automation tools, etc. Products should improve business processes, increase individual productivity or overall organizational efficiency.

Best Business Software Product or Service
Awards the software or service that best automates business processes in the enterprise. Includes products such as human resource management, accounting, ERP, etc.

Best Consumer Productivity Product or Service
Awards the product or service that most effectively assists individuals in a personal task. Examples include genealogy, home photo editing, home legal, travel and home reference software or web services.

  • Product cannot be primarily instructional.
  • Word processing, spreadsheets or presentation software are not eligible.

Best Content Management Solution
Awards the technology solution or platform that best adds value to content accessed or distributed by the enterprise or the end-user. Enables the creation, management and modification of information on web site or other information resource. Includes content creation, categorization, workflow, publishing and delivery.

Best Corporate Learning Technology Solution
Awards the best technology platform, service or provider that supports the continuing education of corporate employees via electronic means. Includes content development, delivery and packaging and Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Best Customer Relations Management (CRM) Solution
Awards the best software product or service designed to expand a company's knowledge about, and relationship with, its current or potential customers and/or partners. Includes CRM, PRM, SFA, marketing automation, personalization products and services.

Best eBusiness Solution
Awards the best software program or service designed to enable business to be conducted electronically between partners and/or customers. Includes supply chain management, eProcurement, exchanges, delivery facilitation, fulfillment, inventory, billing, partner relationships and similar products.

Best eCommerce Solution
Awards the software program or service that best facilitates eCommerce functions. Includes order forms, encryption, credit card payment, personalization tools, shopping carts, comparison bots and delivery processes as well as other innovative features.

Best Enterprise Portal Platform
Awards the best software product or service designed to develop and manage an Intranet or Extranet that integrates access to applications, data and information for employees, customers and businesses suppliers.

Best Internet-Based Communication/Collaboration Solution
Awards the product or service that best facilitates individual or group interaction via the Internet. Includes email software, instant messaging software, translation services, voiceover-IP and P2P. Also includes real-time conferencing and collaboration over the Internet.

Best Mobile Product or Service
Awards the best software application, software service or infrastructure solution that enables access to software functionality and boosts the productivity and adaptability of a mobile device, including small form factor devices and/or phones. Includes operating systems, infrastructure and network solutions.

  • Websites are not eligible.

Best Numeric/Database Application
Awards the best business software application designed for numeric or data analysis. Includes business management, numeric analysis and information management products. Examples include spreadsheet and database programs, RDBMS, database reporting & analysis software, statistical analysis and decision support products.

Best Security Solution
Awards the software solution that best provides security to individual data, networks or Internet transactions. Includes authentication, firewalls, virtual private networks, encryption, intrusion detection, policy-based management, managed services, anti-virus products, etc.

  • Digital Rights Management Solutions should be nominated in the Best Digital Rights Management Product or Service category.

Best Software Development Product
Awards the best programming language, application or development
tool(s) for software or online use. Includes toolkits, diagnostic programs, applet and plug-in development tools, database development programs, etc.

Best Software Service
Awards the best software service accessible through the Internet or an internal network. Includes any service (e.g. productivity applications, human resources, accounting, budgeting, sales force automation, Internet marketing & advertising services, transaction processes, etc.) managed by a provider and utilized by businesses over the Internet or an internal network.

Best Storage Software
Awards the best product or service that manages the remote storage and retrieval of, and access to, information and data across networks. Includes SANs, storage infrastructure, backup and recovery, clustering, resource management and performance products.

Best Systems Management Tool
Awards the tool that best assists system administrators manage a network. Includes performance monitors, system management, load-balancing tools, user analysis tools, website administration utilities, caching software and content delivery networks.

Best Web Services / EAI Solution
Awards the product or service that best connects disparate applications and data across an enterprise or between enterprises. Includes web services infrastructure, middleware, system integration tools, etc.

Best Content Management Solution
Awards the technology solution or platform that best adds value to content accessed by the end-user or distributed by the enterprise. Enables the creation, management and modification of information on intranets, extranets, web sites or other information resources. Includes content categorization, modification, workflow, publishing and delivery.

Best Digital Rights Management Solution
Awards the product that best allows content owners to securely distribute various forms of digital assets, maintain branding and determine how that content can be used, reused, purchased, copied and/or distributed by its users.

Best Online Consumer Service
Awards the best website for information targeted toward home users. Includes online magazines, database-driven information resources, product/services comparisons, etc.

Best Online Personal Financial Service
Awards the best website for financial information and/or services targeted toward the individual user. Includes online tax preparation, investment management, online banking, etc.

Best Online Professional Financial Information Service
Awards the best online service providing financial or market data information and/or news. Includes real-time market data, financial news services, market indices and analysis, credit services, information related to companies, stocks, bonds and markets.

Best Online Business News or Information Service
Awards the best online business news or information service covering cross-industry or vertical-markets.

Best Online Legal or Tax Information Service
Awards the online service that best utilizes information in the public domain. Includes legal and/or regulatory services, public record databases, government reports and data, etc.

Best Online Reference or Directory Service
Awards the online service that best packages reference information. Includes directories, encyclopedias, maps, etc.

Best Online Science/Technology/Medical Information Service
Awards the best online service for science, technology and/or medical information. Includes STM journals, chemical properties data, geophysical data, medical data, patents, standards and specifications, technical papers and reports.

Best Search Engine
Awards the service that best brings relevant information to users through the use of "Web crawlers," "spiders," or "robots," and/or sophisticated indexing and abstracting tools. Can be used on the open Internet or within corporate networks.


EDUCATION SPECIFIC CATEGORIES

Best Corporate Learning Technology Solution
Awards the best technology platform, service or provider that supports the continuing education of corporate employees via electronic means. Includes content development, delivery and packaging and Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Best Elementary Education Instructional Solution
Awards the best school-based education technology solution for curriculum and content that is specifically targeted toward students in grades K-6.

  • Products nominated in this category cannot be nominated in the Best Education Technology Solution for Home/Consumer category.

Best Secondary Education Instructional Solution
Awards the best school-based education technology solution for curriculum and content that is specifically targeted toward students in grades 7-12.

  • Products nominated in this category cannot be nominated in the Best Education Technology Solution for Home/Consumer category.

Best Postsecondary Education Instructional Solution
Awards the best higher education technology solution for curriculum and content that is specifically targeted toward students in postsecondary learning environments including undergraduate and graduate level courses.

  • Products nominated in this category cannot be nominated in the Best Education Technology Solution for Home/Consumer category.

Best K-16 Education Administration Solution
Awards the best administrative or enterprise product designed for the school-based market. Includes technology integration software, educational groupware and educational server solutions.

  • School-based market includes educational institutions, any grades K-16.
  • Products nominated in this category cannot be nominated in the Best Education Technology Solution for Home/Consumer category.

Best K-16 Educational Special Needs Solution
Awards the best product specifically designed to benefit students with unique needs, including physical or learning disabilities. Includes special education or English as a Second Language (ESL) software and cross-media products.

  • Includes any grades K-16.

Best K-16 Educational Total Comprehensive Solution
Awards the education technology solution that best enables the integration of technology into teaching and learning. Includes content, administration and infrastructure.

  • Includes any grades K-16.

Best New K-16 Education Solution
Awards the best education technology solution that debuted in 2001-2002. Includes curriculum, administration and professional development across all education market segments.

  • Includes any grades K-16.

Best Education Technology Solution for Home/Consumer
Awards the educational technology solution that best extends traditional learning into the home.

  • Primary market must be home users.
  • Products nominated for this category cannot be nominated for any other school-based education category.

Best Lifelong Learning Product or Service
Awards the educational technology solution that best extends learning beyond school-based market or other traditional means in education institutions.

  • Primary market must be users desiring to learn something new for their own interest or skills development
  • Products nominated for this category cannot be nominated for any other school-based education category.
