  • Affinity Debit Card Platform, Tempo Payments, Inc.

Tempo's new product enables people to design and apply for affinity debit cards online. These cards are unique because they run on a major payment network (e.g., MasterCard), can be provided by any business or non-profit, and connect to a consumer's existing bank account.

With the launch of this new product, Tempo is modeling itself as a web-based, debit version of MBNA, the long time leader in affinity credit cards (now owned by Bank of America). While affinity credit cards account for a large percentage of the credit card market, no affinity debit segment has ever developed because of the limitations of traditional, bank-issued debit cards. Few consumers would want an affinity debit card, when this would require them to first change bank accounts. Tempo's new product threatens to be enormously disruptive because it shatters the historical paradigm.

Tempo's new product makes it easy for a broad and diverse range of organizations to offer affinity debit card programs. Consumers visit websites, powered by Tempo, that reflect the branding of the various participating affinity partners. The process of applying for a card is intuitive and easy. In addition to providing basic personal information, the applicant also is able to customize their card by downloading a photograph of their choice. Once submitted, the application is immediately decisioned based on a real-time underwriting process. The card is then sent via mail and activated by the consumer back at the relevant affinity partner website.

All cards are simultaneously enabled for signature, PIN, and ATM transactions. They are also branded by the affinity organization, and accepted everywhere MasterCard is accepted.

Tempo's underlying technology platform has been built entirely using open source software. The Company, which is headquartered in San Mateo, CA, first received venture capital funding in late 2005.
