Literary Companion & Assessments21 - AcademicMerit, LLC

AcademicMerit, based in Portland, Maine, delivers innovative online tools that seamlessly link learning, instruction, and assessment -- preparing students, teachers, and administrators for the era of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the increasing emphasis on personalized and blended learning.

Developed specifically for English Language Arts in grades 7-12, Assessments21 and Literary Companion provide schools with a suite of complementary, user-friendly tools that combine quality content and practical assessments to both improve and measure student performance in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written analysis.

Assessments21 enables teachers to administer classroom-based common assessments in reading comprehension and written analysis using a library of short stories, poems, and non-fiction texts divided into four levels of difficulty. The resulting data are aligned directly with the CCSS -- facilitating targeted, differentiated instruction.

Literary Companion provides text-specific, CCSS-aligned formative assessments throughout a literature unit that enhance students' understanding of classic and contemporary literature, while strengthening vocabulary, reading comprehension and written analysis -- the very skills measured by Assessments21.

Together, these programs reflect the company's belief that the path to meaningful learning and instruction begins with assessments of obvious value to both student and teacher.

    BrainHoney - Agilix Labs

BrainHoney is learning infrastructure. It is core learning technology, digital content, assessment and alignment that powers virtual schools, university systems, traditional and blended schools, teacher training programs, and other custom solutions. Unlike other systems that require you to adapt to their way of teaching and learning, BrainHoney adapts what you need it to be and grows with your organization's needs.

The popular BrainHoney LMS has been used in all 50 states and more than 50 countries, and powers hundreds of thousands of blended and virtual enrollments from elementary schools to graduate schools. BrainHoney enables rapid creation and deployment of custom education technology solutions for less total cost of ownership than implementing off-the-shelf products or building solutions from scratch. And, because of its individualized learning and collaborative capabilities, the BrainHoney LMS has been heralded as the forerunner in next-generation learning technologies.

There are five primary areas of the BrainHoney platform that form the basis of efficient and effective learning solutions. These primary areas are:

    Assessment
BrainHoney provides robust functionality for both automatically graded assessments as well as instructor graded activities. Its extensible framework enables standard quiz items, custom interactive items, algorithmic questions, symbolic math items, item banks, collaborative authoring, assignment dropbox, rubrics, peer evaluation, and much, much more. Web services, javascript and SCORM API’s enable developers to create new and innovative interactive assessments that range from new question types to immersive environments. All assessment types can be directly aligned to and tracked against learning outcomes.

    Digital Content
BrainHoney deploys a “content-cloud” model for the creation, editing, sharing, and management of digital content. Authors create learning content using WYSIWYG tools, integrate content from third-party sources, share content with other authors and instructors, import standards-based packages, or upload content exported from web sites, LMSs, or other sources. Innovative content management tools reduce maintenance costs, enable multi-tiered versioning of content, and ensure exact alignment to learning outcomes. Search functionality supports both highly structured queries as well as page-rank “Google-like” search algorithms.

    Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes are integral to the BrainHoney platform. All items in BrainHoney – from individual quiz items to large scale group projects to discussion forums to digital content – can be aligned to learning outcomes. These outcomes include state and national learning objectives and can be extended with custom outcome sets. Integrated logic enables individual learning plans based on both outcome mastery and prior performance.

    Collaboration
Collaboration tools in the BrainHoney platform facilitate collaboration not only in traditional forms such as online discussions, blogs, wikis, and journals, but also during the creation and management of digital curriculum. Instructors can share materials, quiz items, and other resources with each other to leverage the power of the community.

    Rights and Permissions
One of the toughest challenges when deploying learning solution is managing the rights and permissions of the users. BrainHoney secures personal information, distributes extremely granular access rights, ensurse content access matches license agreements, and provides robust administration tools. BrainHoney APIs enable rapid customization with standard authentication schemes, SISs, and portal technologies.

    www.gaggle.net - Gaggle.Net, Inc.

At Gaggle, we strongly believe that every child deserves to learn to communicate effectively using 21st century methods, but we also realize that student safety must be a priority for schools to use these tools. Therefore, we host these resources in a safe online learning environment with the highest degree of CIPA compliance designed specifically for K-12 education.

Gaggle is a pioneer in this area and has grown from being a safe student email provider to the leader in safe technology tools for the K-12 market. Today we provide Web 2.0 collaboration and productivity tools that engage students through personal and group communication, organization, creativity, and networking.

As early as 2002 we began releasing new tools to complement our email including Profile Pages, Chat Rooms, Message Boards, Blogs, Digital Lockers, and Homework Drop Boxes. We are constantly listening to the needs of teachers and students to continue to expand our solution to meet their needs.

2010 was an exciting year for Gaggle, with the release of our new online tools collectively referred to as Gaggle Apps. Gaggle Apps includes Gaggle Office, a Social Learning Wall, Safe Teacher-Student SMS Texting, GaggleTube, Gaggle Mobile, and Integrated Calendars. These tools help educators foster a true 21 st century, safe online learning environment.

Full internet safety is best accomplished with a combination of both filtering and monitoring. However, monitoring students can be time consuming for busy educators. To solve this problem, Gaggle began offering our Human Monitoring System in the fall of 2005. HMS puts monitoring of blocked messages in Gaggle's hands, eliminating the need for teachers to review questionable communications. In addition, it greatly improves the safety and security of students in both the online and the real world. For example, Gaggle's HMS team has uncovered bullying, drug use, threats of school violence, teen depression, suicide intentions, abusive domestic situations, and inappropriate activities between students and teachers.

Gaggle realizes today's students are social learners. Rather than pushing against the tide, schools can embrace the benefits in a safe and controlled environment. One forward-thinking Associate Superintendent in a large urban district wanted to introduce social networking in his middle schools as a means to engage those students in a cross-district community. The goal was to improve student success when moving into high school (based on research that middle school students are more successful long-term if they have strong connections and peer groups in place before high school). Originally that was to be accomplished using Gaggle's message boards, but our CEO and founder, Jeff Patterson, was so inspired by this vision, he decided to create our own Social Wall. The response has been tremendous, and the use of the Social Wall and its Social Groups continues to grow.

Gaggle's response to the ever-evolving needs of K-12 educators and students has allowed us to create a safe and nurturing community where technology can engage learners and support curriculum.

  • RethinkAutism.com - Rethink Autism, Inc.

Rethink Autism was founded with a mission to make effective and affordable best practice treatment tools available to professionals and parents of children on the autism spectrum, no matter where they are located worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 1 in 110 new born children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. Also according to the CDC, there are over 730,000 individuals between the ages of 0-21 on the autism spectrum (and an estimated 19 million worldwide). While effective treatment does exist, the controlled availability of credentialed providers and high cost, as much as $70,000 to $100,000 per year for the prescribed 25-40 hours/week of therapy, limit its potential benefit for the growing population with the disorder. Limited public support services further amplify this challenge for typical families caring for an affected child.

Using technology to deliver research-based clinical best practice treatment programs, Rethink Autism has created a unique online service providing schools and organizations (including early intervention providers, social service agencies, managed care organizations, etc.) as well as caregivers and parents with training for implementing treatment, tools for evaluating an individual child's needs, a comprehensive video-based curriculum with over 1,200 teaching steps, data tracking systems for measuring a child's progress and automating case management, and an online professional support system. It is geared towards children with autism from point of diagnosis through early adolescence, covers a broad range of skills (e.g., academics, language, social, motor, daily living, behavior management), and spans the entire autism spectrum. The recently-launched Rethink Autism Training Center provides training tools for organizational staff and our comprehensive curriculum allows the professional to prepare their own programs for individual clients. Our Company plans to offer its services in Spanish next year. In addition, leaders in the field of autism treatment, education and research serve on our Scientific Advisory Board, including Dr. Fred Volkmar, Director of the Yale University Child Study Center and Dr. Louis Vismara, Co-Founder of the M.I.N.D. Institute.
