In 2012, SIIA will offer CODiE Awards under three main category types:

Business Software - applications, products and services that are developed by independent software vendors (ISVs) for use in business, government, academic, or other organizational settings

Digital Content - applications, products and services that are developed by data and content publishers and platform providers for use in business, government, academic, or other organizational settings

Education Technology - applications, products and services that are developed by publishers, software companies, and technology developers for use in the K-12 and/or postsecondary markets

BUSINESS SOFTWARE CATEGORIES

Best Asset Management Solution

Awards the software solution that best audits and manages software assets. This award includes all solutions designed to audit software assets across a network environment.

Judges will be looking for:

Best Business or Competitive Intelligence Solution

Recognizes the application or service that best facilitates analysis of data, research, and/or competitive information, enabling business managers to make strategic decisions. Solutions may support reporting, online analytical processing, analytics, data mining, business performance management, benchmarking, text mining, and predictive analytics.

Best Cloud Application/Service

Recognizes the best solution for creating, delivering, and/or managing services in a cloud computing enviornment. Includes virtualization, billing, dynamic provisioning, automatic deployment, load balancing and performance optimization.

Recognizes the best solution for providing infrastructure as a service, including infrastructure, provisioning, security, reporting/controls, storage, and backup in a seamless, scalable, and flexible manner.

Recognizes the best cloud platform that increases the speed of development of cloud applications, reduces cost of development, automates deployment, and provides flexibility and scalability.

Recognizes the best application programming interface (API) for connecting disparate applications and data across software programs using Web services standards such as SOAP, XML and WDSL. Includes Web services enabling technologies, infrastructure, middleware, system integration tools, etc.

Awards the best online consumer service, with a specific focus on information targeted toward individual consumers. Includes: travel, sports, consumer medical reference, general reference, tax preparation, and other information resources that consumers utilize. Excludes services whose primary focus is news.

Recognizes the best product that gathers or collects information or applications from disparate sources including news, business publications, journals, periodicals, company information, etc. for reuse, resale, or distribution from a single platform. Products may be developed for the broader market or customized based on user needs.

Recognizes the best service dedicated to providing credit reporting information for consumers and businesses. Information could include public records, personal or business credit scoring, credit research, investment worthiness information of bonds and other related services.

Awards the service that best packages reference information. Includes encyclopedias, maps, wikis, etc. for home or business use.

Recognizes the solution that best utilizes a broad range of information in the public domain or generated by governments or government-funded research to generate GRC solutions. Particular emphasis should be placed on ways this information is enhanced by nominees.

Lead Generation products are those web and mobile products which serve to generate leads by providing compelling information to consumers. This category may also include vertical community sites. The lead generation category includes products that are aimed at generating either b2b or b2c leads.

Recognizes the best solution for access to primary and secondary legal research sources; business development tools as well as litigation support and e-discovery solutions dedicated to the legal profession.

Recognizes the best online service dedicated to providing information to doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, researchers, and companies in the medical and health industry or medical patients and healthy living interested consumers. Sources might include research, health institution rating information, medical professional or consumer health news or search solutions, diagnosis/prognosis information, professional or consumer health workflow solutions, pharmaceutical data, surgical information, patient care information, etc.

Recognizes the best digital service that delivers comprehensive company, business and/or industry information, news and data. Includes company profiles, people, financial data, analyst reports, vertical segment, niche business oriented publications, market research, etc.

Recognizes the best online news service. May include aggregation of multiple news sources, original news content or a combination of both. Nominees may be general news providers as well as providers of vertical market-specific news.

Recognizes the best online service providing access to data, information, or news in fields such as astronautics, biology, chemical research or processing, computer and software development, engineering, environmental science, geophysics, medicine/diagnosis/surgical/patient care, pharmaceutical, nanotechnology, patents and trademarks, and physics. Sources could include journals, technical papers and reports, data collections, records, trends, news, standards and specifications.

Recognizes the best online service dedicated to delivering information and news relating to elections, campaigns, campaign finance, voting records, election laws and regulations. May include information from federal, state and local jurisdictions.

Best Sales & Marketing Intelligence

Sales and marketing intelligence includes those products focused on providing actionable information to sales and marketing professionals. Content may be focused on the identification of potential targets and/or ongoing sales intelligence about accounts and executives from web, news and social media sources. They may also include products designed to clean or maintain prospect lists. These products may include stand-alone websites and databases, plugins to CRM systems and mobile apps. Emphasize the tools that make sales & marketing people efficient.

Best Solution Integrating Content into Workflow

Awards the best product, service, or application integrating content into an end-user workflow for any user group (e.g., CRM, legal, scientific, financial planning and analysis, etc.). Products that can be nominated include a complete end-to-end user application, an integration of content and/or new features into an existing application, a service, or a customized solution using APIs, widgets, mobile apps or other links into to content.

Best Classroom Management System

Recognizes the best system designed for K-12 educators that provides any or all of the following: student information systems, data management and reporting tools, gradebooks, standards alignment tools, packages that link data and resources to instruction, and other platform tools that take user content.

Judges will be looking for:

Best Corporate Learning/Workforce Development Solution

Recognizes the best platform, service or provider that supports the efforts of organizations (business, government, academia) to educate employees in a body of specific knowledge that aids in the successful execution of an employee's job. Includes applications that educate on internal processes, practices, expectations, and objectives or train on workplace safety, technical assignments, hazardous material management, machinery operation, or emergency response training. Includes learning management systems, and content development, delivery and packaging tools.

Best Cross-Curricular Solution

Recognizes the best non-content-specific software tool for students, educators or administrators that can be used in multiple curriculum areas in the K-12 or postsecondary markets. Includes productivity and creativity solutions that support instruction or management across different courses or subject areas, such as document creation, graphic design, workflow, problem solving or web development.

Best Education Community Solution

Recognizes the online system designed to provide social learning, collaboration, and education community support for K-12 or postsecondary students, teachers and administrators. Includes tools for teacher communication, class/lecture capture, resource centers, collaboration and planning tools, blogs, wikis and other interactive, social media solutions.

Best Education Game or Simulation

Recognizes the best game application designed for K-12, postsecondary or adult students that uses active, virtual learning environments to enable students to learn/apply curriculum concepts in an entertaining, educational way. This solution can be either an instructional, diagnostic, or assessment tool designed for pre-school through adult students or instructional/administrative leaders.

Best Education Reference Solution

Recognizes the service that best packages reference, library or research information for educational purposes in the K-12 and/or postsecondary markets. This service can include content such as encyclopedias, maps, databases and source material.

Recognizes the best educational software solution, either curriculum or administrative, designed for integration and use with unique devices including interactive white boards, personal response systems, smartpens, testing/diagnostic equipment, or hardware peripherals This solution may be designed for the K-12 or postsecondary markets or both and support delivery of instruction, classroom management, monitor student performance, and improving communication.

Judges will be looking for:

Best Educational Use of a Mobile Device

Recognizes the best educational application, either curriculum or administrative, that is delivered to mobile devices, including smartphones, personal digital assistants, tablets, or integrated web-based, hardware/software solutions. This solution may be designed for the K-12 or postsecondary markets or both and provides students and faculty access to apps, courses, content or tools.

Judges will be looking for:

Best Instructional Solution for Special Needs Students

Recognizes the best teaching application specifically designed to benefit students with unique educational needs, including those with physical or learning disabilities or those who are gifted and talented in the K-12 or postsecondary markets. Includes solutions that are 508 compliant and provide instructional materials that are accessible or developed under the principals of universal design for learning (UDL).

Best Instructional Solution in Other Curriculum Areas

Recognizes the best teaching application focusing in non-core curriculum areas for students in the K-12 or postsecondary market. These areas include art, foreign language, music, technology, or multi-disciplinary topics.

Best K-12 Course or Learning Management Solution

Recognizes the best digital learning environment/system designed for K-12 educators to manage curriculum-based content, student access and use, diagnostic and remediation programs, data management and reporting tools. Includes course and content-based learning management systems used by students.

Best K-12 Enterprise Solution

Recognizes the best non-instructional business management application or service that supports education enterprises in the K-12 market, including transportation, human resources, talent management, security, food services, digital communication/security solutions, scheduling and registration services, data mining, data analysis, student information systems, network services, special ed funding tracking, IEP tracking, etc. This solution, delivered by the Internet or by network, will also best enable data exchange, processing and reporting.

Recognizes the best broad-based, multi-disciplinary teaching application or solution for curricula and content that is specifically targeted toward students in K-12 learning environments. Includes products that offer online curriculum, assessments, and reporting, integrated with tools for classroom management, planning, and collaboration.

Recognizes the best instructional product that offers mathematics curriculum and content for students in the K-12 and postsecondary markets. Includes solutions that offer ability to deliver custom-crafted materials, digitally and on a number of devices. Helps students navigate their digital/ebooks and reference content in a format that fits the way they learn with interactive media, collaboration tools and course content.

Best Professional Learning Solution for Education

Recognizes the best educational application or service designed to support K-12 or postsecondary education institutions in the development of faculty and administrative staff. Includes professional development programs, learning management systems, and content development, with video-based delivery and packaging tools.

Best Reading/English Instructional Solution

Recognizes the best instructional solution for language arts, reading, composition, and English curricula and content for students in the K-12 and postsecondary markets. Includes solutions for native and non-native English speakers at all levels, and can be managed classroom/course-based instruction or online supplemental instruction for individuals.

Best Science/Health Instructional Solution

Recognizes the best instructional solution for science and health curricula and content for students in the K-12 and postsecondary markets. Includes managed classroom/course-based instruction or online supplemental instruction for individuals.

Recognizes the best instructional solution for social sciences curricula and content for students in the K-12 and postsecondary markets. Includes managed classroom/course-based instruction or online supplemental instruction for individuals.

Recognizes the best application or solution for high-stakes assessments/preparation for high-stakes tests in the K-12 and postsecondary markets for use in either formative or summative assessments.

Recognizes the educational solution that best delivers courses or degree programs online. Can be designed for tutoring, self-paced digital instruction, home-schooling, advance placement course work, credit recovery, additional instructional support, personalized learning environments, or college credit and targets the K-12 or postsecondary markets.

Companies will not need to nominate in any of these categories when completing the application. Finalists will automatically be considered for the top awards. The winner in each category will be based on scores from both rounds of judging. The award will be presented to the product with the highest score from among the categories that qualify.

To be eligible for Best K-12 Education Solution, you must be a finalist in at least one of the following categories:
