Ko’s Journey is an educational game intended for middle school math students. Ko is a young girl who is thrown into a rite of passage journey to seek out her kin. She encounters many obstacles along her journey, such as saving a wolf pup by mixing medicinal plants in specific ratios. These obstacles use everyday units of measure (math), all while demystifying the complexity of math. Each obstacle makes sense within the context of the storyline itself and presents real-life scenarios allowing the learner to gradually learn math concepts. Live, humorous videos of students on a ‘journey’ of their own are also used to discuss and reiterate the use of these measures and how they relate to everyday life. The most important aspect of the game is its ability to build context around math that is meaningful. Most games have a disconnected mechanic, such as 5+5=10, then an asteroid blows up; this is not teaching in context.
