Brown Bag Lunch - Executive Survival
Tactics -
September 24, 2003, 11:30
am-1:30 pm, New York City. The market has become
dominated by a relatively few large information
publishers. Middle market players and startups are being
acquired or joining forces in a continual effort to reach
critical mass. Running a company is about much more than
growth and survival these days -- we also have to be
experts in finance, compliance, liability, insurance and
securities law . The way you manage your business can
affect how it is valued even if you are years away from
being acquired or achieving liquidity. Come here our panel
of experts talk about survival tips for their company in
this new economy.

2004 Information Industry Summit (IIS) -
January 27, 2004, New York City. The IIS is
the premier annual event for senior executives to discuss
the outlook for the information industry for the coming
year. The summit has sold out each year and we expect it
to quickly sell out once again. Last year's conference
was attended by over 250 senior executives. Planning
is well underway with a fantastic program in place and a
great roster of speakers.

SIIA Content Anti-Piracy (CAP)
- Did you know that the SIIA has an effective program
combating piracy and other forms of copyright
infringement? The CAP group is a collection of
content providers, primarily digital publishing and market
data service companies, who gather under the auspices of SIIA to address issues of compliance, digital right
management, and data piracy. This group is open to
members of SIIA, convenes three times per year, and
distributes its minutes and findings to its members.
There will be a
meeting of the CAP group on Thursday, November 6 in New
York. If you are interested in joining the CAP group,
attending the meeting or would
like more information about the group, please contact Petar Klaetsch, SIIA Director of Intellectual Property
Programs at 202.289.7442, ext. 1311, or via email at

The Amazing Shrinking Newspaper
There is
growing evidence that online media is having an adverse
impact on newspapers. A study of web users conducted
earlier this year by Belden Associates indicated that
newspaper web sites are beginning to cut into print
subscriptions and single-copy sales. In addition, the
study found that web site users who did continue to
purchase print versions read much less frequently. (From

Convergence
of software & content.
If
you missed the July Brown Bag lunch, you missed a great
discussion on the integration of content into
applications. Executives from Yahoo!Finance,
LexisNexis, CCH and Mintz Levin discussed the importance
of having content available to users when and where they
need it. If you missed it,

Open Access for Medical and Scientific Research -
The debate about
open access to scientific and medical research continues
to receive significant attention in the press, and it has
recently been the focus of congressional efforts. Leading
up through the launch of the Public Library of Science (PLOS)
in October, 2003, proponents of free access to scientific
and medical information will continue aggressively working
from multiple directions to build support and momentum for
this effort.
In addition to significant recent media attention, two
recent initiatives in the House of Representatives are
seeking to ensure that taxpayer-funded research remains in
the public domain. For more information about this
subject, including an overview of the legislative efforts,
please read the
