Dr. Curtis R. CarlsonDr. Curtis R. Carlson
President and Chief Executive Officer, SRI International

Dr. Curtis Carlson became president and CEO of SRI International in December 1998. Previously, he spent more than 20 years with Sarnoff Corporation, a wholly owned SRI subsidiary. In 1973, Carlson joined RCA Laboratories, which became part of SRI in 1987 as Sarnoff Corporation where his teams won Emmy® Awards for HDTV and a broadcast image quality system. In 2007, Carlson was named chairman of Sarnoff's Board of Directors. Dr. Carlson has served on numerous public and private boards and government task forces. He has published or presented more than 50 technical publications and holds fundamental patents in the fields of image quality, image coding, and computer vision. His recent book, written with William Wilmot called Innovation: The Five Disciplines for Creating What Customers Want, published in 2006 by Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House. Innovation describes how SRI's unique process for innovation can be applied to all types of commercial and nonprofit enterprises, including the government.



Michael CasserlyMichael Casserly
Executive Director, Council of the Great City Schools

Michael Casserly has served as Executive Director of the Council of the Great City Schools since January 1992 and as Director of Legislation and Research for 15 years prior. As head of the urban school group, Casserly unified big city schools nationwide around a vision of reform and improvement; launched an aggressive research program on trends in urban education; convened the first Education Summit of Big City Mayors and Superintendents; led the nation's largest urban school districts to volunteer for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP); led the first national study of common practices among the nation's fastest improving urban school districts, and launched national task forces on achievement gaps, leadership and governance, finance, professional development, and bilingual education. He is currently spearheading efforts to boost academic performance in the nation's big city schools; strengthening management and operations; challenging inequitable state financing systems; and improving the public's image of urban education. He is a U.S. Army veteran, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and B.A. from Villanova University.

Mick Adkisson is currently the Manager of Education Advocacy for SMART Technologies where he leads direct advocacy and strategy efforts pertaining to the K-12 market segment. Mick is responsible for maintaining relationships with advocacy organizations and government agencies that focus on K-12 education technology. Previously, Mick spent 19 years in the information industry holding a variety of positions within The Boeing Company, Starbucks Corporation and Intel Corporation. Working on many engineering and information related programs, Mick has a very diverse background in software product development processes and technologies. Mick holds an M.S in Information System Management from Seattle Pacific University



Jeremy Auger
Chief Operating Officer, Desire2Learn

Jeremy Auger, Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for day-to-day operations at Desire2Learn Inc. which include executive oversight of Product Development, Organizational Development, IT, and Professional Services, with also heavy involvement in product steering and corporate strategy development. Jeremy comes from a strong technical and business background having worked for numerous high-tech companies throughout North America and has been actively involved with e-Learning and web-based technology companies since the very early days. Jeremy currently sits on the board of directors for the IMS Global Learning Consortium, and with a strong commitment to customer service, and a desire to advance the state-of-the-art, Jeremy has been part of the Desire2Learn team since its inception, and continues taking a leading role in accomplishing success within the online education industry.



Rhoda M Bernstein
Market Director, PLATO Learning

Rhoda Bernstein leads strategy and marketing tactics for PLATO Learning's middle school and high school products. Prior to joining PLATO Learning, Rhoda provided marketing leadership in several technology companies serving the Fortune 1000. Her experience includes selling to a wide range of industries including banking, insurance, legal, publishing, transportation, and management consulting both domestically and overseas.



Michaël BijaouiMichaël Bijaoui
Managing Director, MESA

Michaël Bijaoui serves as Managing Director of MESA, focusing on the education and professional publishing markets. MESA is a boutique investment banking firm that serves growth companies throughout the media and entertainment industries. Prior to joining MESA, Michaël was Vice President, Business Development for McGraw-Hill Education. In that role, Michaël led McGraw-Hill Education's global strategy and mergers and acquisitions activities. During his tenure, McGraw-Hill Education completed 13 acquisitions and equity investments in the U.S., UK, and China, as well as two divestitures. Michaël holds an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor's degree from the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, France.



Karen BillingsKaren Billings
Vice President, Education Division, SIIA

Karen Billings has over 30 years of experience in the education technology industry with positions in management, development, marketing, sales, and classroom teaching. At SIIA she drives the association's work with its 140 member companies for whom educational publishing is a primary business. Prior to SIIA, Billings, was Vice President, Major Business Initiatives for bigchalk Inc, where she drove relationships with major industry partners to respond to new business opportunities and Vice President and General Manager of its MediaSeek Division. She worked at Microsoft Corporation, managing K-12 Strategic Relations and at Claris Corporation, where she ran the Worldwide K-12 and Higher Education Marketing Programs. She served as Director of Sales at Logo Computer Systems, Inc. and as an Executive Editor in the School Division at Houghton-Mifflin Company.



Todd BrekhusTodd Brekhus
Vice President, Product and Market Management, PLATO Learning

Todd Brekhus is an educational leader devoted to introducing new technologies to educators and administrators. As Vice President - Product and Market Management, Todd and his direct reports are responsible for the entire product library, integration of acquired product lines, and bringing new product ideas to market at PLATO Learning. Before coming to PLATO via acquisition, Todd was President and COO of Learning Elements, where he was responsible for implementing business strategy. Todd is currently Board Co-Chair of the Education Division of SIIA.

Richard Carey is a media product development professional with 20+ years of experience creating web applications, games and simulations, video and multimedia programming for the education, corporate and entertainment markets. Currently working as a consultant and contractor, Richard's recent assignments include market analyses, product roadmaps, information architecture and user experience design, web development and video production. He is an active blogger (www.richardcarey.net) and writer on emerging technologies for the education market.

Richard (Dick) Casabonne is is CEO of Casabonne Associates, Inc, a consulting firm which provides strategic planning, publishing program development, market research and school reform. The company annually manages a number of successful conferences and conducts dozens of qualitative research studies through national telephone surveys and focus groups. With executive experience with large publishers and technology providers, Dick has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University and a master of education degree in instructional technology from Boston University.

Senior Vice President Marketing, Pearson

Frank Catalano provides counsel and direction on branding, marketing strategy and tactics for Pearson's U.S. K-12 businesses. Before joining Pearson in 2004, Frank was principal of Catalano Consulting for a dozen years, holding long-term interim marketing executive assignments as well as advising many technology-related companies in computing, education and publishing, among them Apple and McGraw-Hill. Frank also has been known as a marketing strategist and technology industry analyst in print, on radio and on television. Frank is a former member of the SIIA Education Board of Directors.



Karen CatorKaren Cator
Director, Education Leadership and Advocacy, Apple

Karen Cator directs Apple's leadership and advocacy efforts in education. In this role, she is responsible for strategic business development, managing Apple's involvement in education policy efforts, Apple Professional Development, the Apple Distinguished Educator Program and the publishing of media rich teaching and learning practices on the Apple Learning Interchange. Cator came to Apple in 1997 from the public education sector, most recently leading Technology planning and implementation in Juneau, Alaska. She also served as Special Assistant for Telecommunications for the Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. Cator holds a Masters in school administration from the University of Oregon and Bachelors in early childhood education from Springfield College. She is the immediate past chair of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and serves on the several boards including the Software & Information Industry Association (Education Division).



Milton Chen, PhDMilton Chen, PhD
Executive Director, George Lucas Educational Foundation

Milton Chen is executive director of The George Lucas Educational Foundation. Prior to joining GLEF in 1998, Chen was the founding director of PBS's KQED Center for Education, in San Francisco, managing the channel's television programming, Web content, and outreach services for schools and families. He has been a director of research at Sesame Workshop, working on Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and 3-2-1 Contact, and an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Chen chairs the advisory council for St. Vincent College's Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children's Media, and is a trustee of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, devoted to environmental stewardship. His work has been honored by recognition from the Congressional Black Caucus, and he has received the Sesame Workshop's Elmo Award and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Fred Rogers Award. He recently has joined a group of thirty-five Fulbright New Century Scholars working on innovation, access, and diversity issues in education, spending three months in the United Kingdom at University of Edinburgh. Perhaps most importantly, on his fiftieth birthday, he was named a Jedi Master by George Lucas.

Karen joined Key Curriculum Press as a Sales and Marketing Analyst in 1996, and was most recently Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing before taking on her current role. Karen has a degree in Marketing and Education from Saint John's College in York, England. She began her career in publishing at Burlington Books in Athens, Greece, where she became Director of Operations. She moved to California in 1996 and later earned an MBA from Saint Mary's College of California.

Christopher T. CrossChristopher T. Cross
Chairman, Cross & Joftus

Christopher T. Cross is chairman of Cross & Joftus, LLC, an education consulting firm. In addition Mr. Cross serves as a consultant to the Broad Foundation and the C.S. Mott Foundation. He has served as a member of the advisory board for the School Evaluation Service program of Standard and Poor's, as a senior fellow with the Center for Education Policy and as a Distinguished Senior Fellow with the Education Commission of the States. From 1994 to 2002 he served as president and chief executive officer of the Council for Basic Education (CBE), and from 1994-1997 as president of the Maryland State Board of Education. Before joining CBE, Mr. Cross served as Director of the Education Initiative of The Business Roundtable and as Assistant Secretary for Educational Research and Improvement in the U.S. Department of Education. He has written extensively in the education and public policy areas and has been published in numerous scholarly and technical publications. Mr. Cross is author of the book Political Education: National Policy Comes of Age, published in 2003.

Chris joined Berkery Noyes from Eduventures, Inc., the leading education market research and consulting firm, where he managed business development, consulted on client growth strategies, and created the company's consultative sales methodology. Chris brings a wide range of education, management, and consulting experience to Berkery Noyes, including past service as Vice President of business development at I.COMM, Inc., a software design and network integrator specializing in the education, government and healthcare markets. As part of his work for I.COMM, Curran ran SchoolFirst Foundation, a non-profit arm of the company that combines innovative educational technology applications into model systems that were donated to under-served schools.

Kevin Custer offers over 17 years of experience in technology and telecommunications and is a recognized leader in launching and growing successful technology businesses in the online and enterprise markets. He has been the primary architect in the launching of five startups, four of which achieved over $10 million in revenues within their first 3 years. Kevin serves as a Principal in Arc Capital Development who invest in and operate emerging market companies. Previously he took a small Internet company, Brainium Technologies, public through a reverse-takeover of Canada¹s seventh-fastest growing public company. In his previous position at Infonautics, he led the creation of Electric Library, an Internet-based subscription service that grossed over $20 million in its first 30 months. Kevin also served as the chairman of both the e-business and the education section of the Software & Information Industry Association.

Bijaya Devkota is the Chief Information Officer at Charles County Public Schools in Maryland. For the past four years, he has provided vision and leadership in the development and implementation of the district-wide IT programs. Previously he worked at Coopers & Lybrand, PrinceWaterhouseCoopers and IBM Mr. Devkota specialized in large systems integration, systems reengineering, integrated communications services, decision support and data mining implementations. He taught various graduate courses in Information Science at American University from 1994-2000.



Dr. David DocktermanDr. David Dockterman
Vice President & Chief Academic Officer, Tom Snyder Productions

Dr. David Dockterman is vice president and chief academic officer at Tom Snyder Productions, a Scholastic company, where he has been developing award-winning, research-based educational software for the last 25 years. Among his team's scores of programs are Decisions, Decisions; Thinking Reader; FASTT Math; and TimeLiner. David authored the books Great Teaching in the One Computer Classroom and Weaving Technology into Your Teaching. He also co-created and co-wrote Science Court, the highly acclaimed animated TV show that ran on ABC's Saturday Morning. A former classroom teacher, David is an Adjunct Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he earned his Ed.D. He served nine years as an elected member of his local school committee and has dedicated himself to supporting classroom teaching and the successful integration of technology into schools.

Ken EastwoodKen Eastwood
Superintendent, Middletown New York

Dr. Eastwood guided the development of one of the country's "best" educational technology programs while serving as Superintendent at Oswego City School District. (as recognized by AASA - American Association of School Administrators 2000, District Administration Magazine 2003, the U. S. Department of Education in 1999). At his current job in Middletown, NY, he is involved in the complete re-engineering of that district's instructional and technology programs. Middletown's recently approved a long range technology plan will position Middletown to be one of the top tier school districts, technologically speaking, in the next two years. In Ken's previous superintendency at Oswego City Schools he was recognized as one of the country's "Top Ten Tech Savvy Superintendents" in 2003 and as one of the "Impact 30 for 2000" by eSchool News. Ken was also the recipient of the "Computerworld-Smithsonian Award" in 1999 and Digital Electronic Corporation's "Masters of Innovation Award" in 1998. Dr. Eastwood spearheaded a long-range plan for technology that resulted in a telecommunications network and instructional staff development program that has received state and national recognition from corporations such as Microsoft, Digital Electronics, and Cabletron. Dr. Eastwood's other interests lie in the area of standards based instructional programming and educational change and assessment where he has had numerous articles and books published.



Julie EvansJulie Evans
Chief Executive Officer, Project Tomorrow

Julie Evans is the CEO of Project Tomorrow (www.tomorrow.org), a national education nonprofit organization (formerly known as NetDay). Previously, Ms. Evans enjoyed a successful 17-year career in national and regional sales and marketing management with Unisys and two education technology startups. Ms. Evans is a graduate of Brown University and serves on the Board of Directors of Project Tomorrow, the KOCE-TV Education Advisory Council, the Childrens' First Advisory Council and the Association of Women in Technology Council. She is a Frances Hesselbein Community Innovation Fellow and a frequent speaker and commentator on children, education, science and technology issues.



Bryan FalconBryan Falcon
Haiku Learning Systems

Bryan Falcon's two companies, Haiku Learning Systems, a Web 2.0 Learning Management System company, and Lightsky, a custom web development firm, are based in northern Indiana. He has been a leader in education technology and software development for over a decade; teaching college and overseeing large-scale technology integration projects for several school districts. Haiku Learning Systems was established in 2006 as a solution for educators and trainers needing a next-generation learning management system.



Robert A. FianceRobert A. Fiance
Chairman, Flatworld/Education 2000

Mr. Fiance has over fifteen years of senior management experience in the education marketplace. Prior to joining STI, he was CEO of TriVision, an educational technology company focused on solutions for the management of professional development and alternative education programs. He also served as CEO of SchoolPalm.com. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Canter & Associates, where he launched and managed a new Distance Learning Masters Division in 1995, which has since grown to over $25M in annual revenues. When Sylvan Learning Systems acquired Cantor & Associates, he lead the team that exceeded all earn out goals related to the acquisition. Mr. Fiance holds an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara.



Ron Fitzgerald

Ron Fitzgerald - President of MathResources provides the general management for MathResources. Mr. Fitzgerald has 29 years of experience in the educational publishing industry and is looking forward to many more. He is the Treasurer of the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences. Prior to MathResources Ron worked for Allyn & Bacon, Wadsworth, Wiley and Harcourt Publishers. In his many roles within these organizations Ron built a strong and lasting relationship with the mathematics community of North America.

Ms. Fivecoat is an established and respected executive coach and her previous industry experience includes Senior Vice President of Sales for Lightspan, Inc, and Area Director of public sector sales for Apple Computer. Prior to her work in the private sector, she held numerous positions in education, including policy leader as the first director of education technology for the State of Texas.

Sari is innovator and seasoned leader in research and product development. From unfolding of UDL at CAST in collaboration with Scholastic, Harcourt, and WebCT to publisher at AGS Publishing/Pearson AGS Globe, and now as owner of EdTech Design Associates, she works to transform teaching and learning with disruptive technologies.



Rob Foshay
Director of Research, Texas Instruments, Inc. - Education & Productivity Solutions Business

Rob Foshay is Director of Research for Texas Instruments Education Technology Group. Dr. Foshay was for 15 years the chief instructional architect of the PLATO Learning System. Prior to joining PLATO he directed instructional design and quality assurance for Applied Learning, Inc. His background also includes a faculty position at the University of Illinois - Champaign School of Basic Medical Sciences, as well as experience as a high school teacher and school media coordinator. His doctorate is in instructional design from Indiana University. He has contributed over 70 major articles to research journals and book chapters on a wide variety of topics in instructional design, technology and education and he is co-author of an award-winning textbook on instructional design. He currently co- chairs SIIA's Research Working Group.

Adam Frey is co-founder of Wikispaces.com, provider of the world's easiest to use wikis. Prior to founding Wikispaces he ran the SourceForge business for VA Linux Systems and has spent ten years building software businesses and online communities. He holds an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and a B.S. from Monash University.



Dr. Larry FruthDr. Larry Fruth
Executive Director, Schools Interoperability Framework Association (SIFA)

Dr. Larry Fruth is currently the Executive Director of the Schools Interoperability Framework Association (SIFA). SIFA is an independent non-profit membership organization comprised of over 1,400 educational institutions, government agencies and software vendors whose mission is the development of a platform independent, vendor-neutral XML Specification to enable data sharing among software applications in pK-12 education internationally. Dr. Fruth comes from a long line of educators with over 20 years of experience in teaching and learning as a classroom teacher/professor, curriculum and professional development designer and state and federal policymaker.



Bryan GreenBryan Green
Software Engineer, EduStructures

Bryan Green is a Software Engineer at Edustructures. He has more than twenty years of experience in diverse projects and industries that include embedded medical devices, EDI client-server systems, phase three clinical trial remote data collection, hosted accounting applications, and client-server defect tracking systems. Since 2003 he has been involved in interoperability projects for the K12 market, and currently holds a seat on the SIFA Technical Board. His professional motto is "Always Be Coding."



Mark Hammer
Vice President, Marketing, CompassLearning

Mark Hammer has over 20 years of experience in education and software marketing. A former educator, Mr. Hammer joined the K12 software industry, first as product manager at COMPanion Corporation, then as VP of Marketing for Sagebrush Corporation. He is currently Vice President of Marketing for CompassLearning. Mr. Hammer has lead re-branding efforts, district-wide adoptions, and unprecedented sales. He holds a BA in English and Art History from the University of Kansas and an MA in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio.



Dr. Ted S. HasslbringDr. Ted S. Hasselbring
Research Professor of Special Education, Peabody College of Vanderbilt University

Over the past twenty-five years, Dr. Hasselbring has conducted research on the use of technology for enhancing learning in students with mild disabilities and those who are at-risk of school failure. Dr. Hasselbring began his career in 1977 as an Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University. Prior to that he was a special education teacher in New York. In 1982, Dr. Hasselbring joined the faculty of Peabody College of Vanderbilt University where for eighteen years he served as the Co-Director of the Learning Technology Center and conducted research on using technology for providing instruction in reading and mathematics. This research resulted in several widely used computer-intervention programs for struggling learners, these include READ 180, FASTT Math, and Simon SIO. In 2000, Dr. Hasselbring joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky and also served as the Executive Director of the National Assistive Technology Research Institute. In 2006, Dr. Hasselbring returned to Vanderbilt to resume his research and development activities in computer intervention. Dr. Hasselbring is a graduate of Indiana University, earning a BS Degree, the MA in Teaching Degree and an Ed.D in Special Education. He has authored more than one hundred articles and book chapters on learning and technology and serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals. Dr. Hasselbring is the former president of the Technology and Media Division of the Council for Exceptional Children, and has served as a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Goals 2000 and the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities. He was a member of the National Governor's Association Committee on Improving High Schools as well as a member of Japan's National Institute of Special Education. Currently, he serves on the advisory board of the George Lucas Education Foundation.



Matthew J. Hausmann
Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Apangea Learning, Inc.

As vice president, marketing and business development for Apangea Learning, Matt leads the teams responsible for the strategic marketing of Apangea Learning's solutions as well as the creation and management of the company's strategic relationships. Prior to joining Apangea Learning, Matt spent six years with e-Travel, Inc. where he was instrumental in the company's growth from start-up to industry leader to the eventual sale to Amadeus S.A. Prior to e-Travel, Matt was a consultant with Ernst & Young where he specialized in e-business practices and implementing corporate and marketing strategies for clients.

Karen Greenwood Henke, Founder and Managing Director of Nimble Press, built her first Web site in 1994. She has been innovating and developing online content and experiences ever since. Her latest venture is Grant Wrangler, a free online listing service of grants and awards that leverages Google Ads, a content management system, search engine optimization, a companion bi-weekly newsletter, and news feeds.



Phyllis Hillwig Ed.D.Phyllis Hillwig Ed.D.
Chief Operating Officer, Words & Numbers

Phyllis leads the senior management team at Words & Numbers. Under her leadership, Words & Numbers has become one of the largest and most respected content creation companies in educational publishing. In addition to speaking at SIIA, she has been a speaker for educational publishing industry events such as NCTM, AEP, and EdNET. She has been sited in numerous industry articles involving trends in outsourcing, opportunities in China, and the publisher's role for training in the digital age. Phyllis' expertise has been sought after from organizations typically outside of education as well. Some of these include serving on two boards, one as the VP of Education for NDIA (National Defense Industry Association) Workforce Development and one with an innovative company spearheading a new publishing distribution model over the Internet.



Kathy HurleyKathy Hurley
Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, Pearson

Kathy Hurley, Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, for Pearson, is a 35-year veteran of the education industry. She has served in senior executive positions with PLATO Learning, The Learning Company, Skillsbank, and IBM. Trace Urdan has covered the for-profit education industry as a research analyst for 10 years and has twice been cited as an All-Star analyst by the Wall Street Journal. Prior to joining Signal Hill, Mr. Urdan headed education research for Robert W. Baird & Co. Before beginning his career as an investment research analyst at DB Alex. Brown, Mr. Urdan held senior management positions within Time Inc. and KPMG Peat Marwick. He earned his BA degree from Yale University and his MBA from Harvard Business School.



Ellen Wagner
Director, Worldwide E-Learning Solutions, Adobe Systems, Incorporated

Ellen Wagner works with product and vertical solutions marketing teams across Adobe to set the strategic direction for elearning products and solutions for corporate education and training, customer enablement and for post-secondary and K-12 education. Adobe's key vertical markets for elearning solutions include financial services, education, government, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. Ellen is a former tenured professor and chair of the educational technology program at the University of Northern Colorado, and project director with the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. She has a Ph.D. in learning psychology from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Ms. Whitby began as a NYC elementary teacher working with English Language Learners. She then spent over ten years teaching Educational Technology at Long Island University, focusing on the emerging field of instructional technology. She developed key initiatives targeting At-Risk Learners in an Urban Environment for several organizations including WICAT Systems, Jostens Learning, Scientific Learning and the Education Division of Apple Computer. She is currently the Director of NYC Metro Strategic Initiatives for Headsprout Early Learning.

As president and co-founder of Inspiration Software, Westhaver has continuously guided the company's product management, marketing and strategic planning initiatives as it has grown to serve more than 80 percent of U.S. school districts and 25 million students and teachers worldwide. She serves on the board of Thomas Edison High School, the only Oregon high school developed specifically to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities as well as the advisory board of Ronald McDonald Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington. Westhaver is also a past president of the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) and has served seven years on the board of the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), Education Division, including four years as co-chairperson.
