Mobile Devices in the Classroom: Enablers or Distracters

The debate continues. Some college professors have started banning the use of laptops in their classrooms -- years after their institutions recommended that freshman bring them to campus. Many K-12 districts are starting, or already have, 1-1 computing initiatives but forbid the use of smartphones and other handheld devices in their classrooms. K-20 campuses are being wired for wireless, and publishers are producing digital options to printed texts, but print is still the norm. Educators nationally and internationally continue the debate swirling around the use of mobile devices in the classroom. Will K-20 instructional leaders find a way to manage and embrace the technology instead of banning it? And if so, when?
