Brown Bag Lunch: Beyond eBooks: eReaders and Information Content Opportunities

By all indications, we are in the midst of a “tipping point” in the adoption of portable devices for consuming digital information content, especially content traditionally delivered in print. Given the implications for the book publishing industry, it isn’t surprising that the majority of public discussion has focused on eBooks generally, and trade book publishing specifically.

The goal of this Brown Bag session is to focus instead on the implications of the widespread adoption of eReaders, tablets, and increasingly capable and prevalent smart phones for other media and information services, including information products targeted to more specialized business, professional, and education markets. How should developers of new information products respond?
Where do the emerging devices solve real user and/or provider problems, and where do they fall short?
What has been learned already from the development and adoption of mobile content products in business, professional, and education markets?
What new opportunities can be addressed?
How should business models be adapted?

Moderator:
Steve Sieck, President, SKS Advisors
Steve Sieck has over twenty-five years’ experience helping the world's leading content and enabling-technology providers develop new products, enter new markets, make strategic investment decisions and align organizational resources with strategic and financial objectives. Clients have included such companies as Reed Elsevier, Thomson, Wolters Kluwer, McGraw-Hill, IDG, CMP Media, Primedia, BellSouth and IBM.

In 2007, Steve formed SKS Advisors, Inc., an independent consultancy that enables media and information companies to accelerate innovation and capitalize more effectively on new business and corporate development opportunities. Previously, he led the U.S. market entry of EPS, Ltd, a London-based provider of information industry advice, analysis, and industry intelligence. Earlier, he directed the Media & Entertainment practice at e-commerce integrator iXL/Scient and managed critical strategy consulting engagements at PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Consulting Services. He also helped lead interactive media research pioneer LINK Resources from small startup to major division of IT industry research leader International Data Corporation.
