Taking the FIA Exam

The FISD FIA is a 150-question, multiple-choice exam that candidates take on a computer at a formal testing center.

Candidates have up to 2 hours 40 minutes to complete the exam. Testing company Kryterion administers FISD Professional Certification exams at any of its 900+ global testing centers.

The material covered by the FISD FIA is outlined in the official syllabus. FISD developed the syllabus in close consultation with experienced practitioners in our sector so it covers the knowledge that is most crucial for success in the financial information industry. The syllabus is divided into four sections: Markets, Data, Technology, and Issues & Trends

How the Test Works: The FISD FIA Exam by the Numbers

  • 150 – The FISD FIA consists of 150 multiple-choice questions.
  • 75% – A score of at least 75% is required to pass the FISD FIA. Achieving this mark earns you an FIA plaque, a place in the FISD FIA Directory, and the right to add the letters FIA after your name.
  • 160 – Candidates have 160 minutes (2 hours and 40 minutes) to complete the exam.
  • 2 – Candidates taking the FISD FIA in a formal testing center must show two forms of ID. At least one ID must be an official government-issued ID, e.g. a passport or driver’s license. Credit/debit cards, store membership cards, employee ID cards, and student ID cards may serve as your second form of identification.
  • 900+ – Testing facilitator Kryterion operates over 900 testing centers globally. There is likely to be a testing center convenient to where you live or work. If there is not a testing center nearby, contact Hope Wilkes to inquire about special accommodations.
  • 72 – Candidates can reschedule or cancel an exam, but this must be done at least 72 hours before the scheduled exam. There are no exceptions to this rule, so choose an exam date carefully and reschedule or cancel an exam as early as possible if a conflict arises. All changes to exam date and time are self-service and made online through the Kryterion testing portal. Do not rely on FISD staff to make changes to an exam schedule. Once there are fewer than 72 hours remaining before a scheduled exam, the chosen time and date are locked in and FISD is charged for the exam by Kryterion, so no changes can be made and the fee is forfeit.

Taking the Exam

KryterionTest takers schedule an exam location, date, and time online through Kryterion’s Webassessor portal. Test centers are located in convenient locations in most major cities globally. FISD provides a step-by-step guide to registering for the FISD FIA.  No test dates available in your area? Contact Hope Wilkes.

Test takers should save all confirmation emails. Confirmation messages contain important information related to the exam including username, password, and the test access code needed on exam day. Test takers will need their username and password information in case they should wish to cancel, reschedule, or book a retake exam. Any cancellations or rescheduling must be done at least 72 hours before a booked exam.

Every candidate is required to physically appear at their specified testing center at the reserved time so their exam can be supervised by test center personnel.

Candidates must bring at least two pieces of photo identification. At least one must be an official government ID, e.g. a passport or driver’s license.

How Secure is the Test?

Kryterion keeps the test secure, ensuring the value of the certification is protected. Close monitoring and the ID requirements serve two purposes:

  • Verify test taker identity. Kryterion makes sure that test takers are who they say they are – no imposter may take the test on the behalf of someone else.
  • Prevent cheating. Test takers cannot exchange information with others, refer to notes, or access the Internet during the exam.
