Publishers and information providers face unrelenting change in their marketplaces and many have reacted by upgrading their talent, reorganizing, buying new technologies, and adopting agile development, only to continue to fall farther behind. The endless pursuit of keeping up with the market begins to resemble a whack-a-mole game where a change in one area causes problems in another, and in the meantime, the market changes.

The problem? The foundations of these businesses are not flexible or extensible enough to keep up with needed changes. Many traditional publishing organizations are hierarchically organized, and have rigidly defined roles, procedures, and ways of doing things. In such environments, change is slow, painful, and expensive. They are monolithic, largely self-contained, and they struggle with rapid, disruptive change.

Platform enterprises, in contrast, have modular organization structures and are driven by collaboration, emerging technologies, agile practices, and co-innovation with partners, customers and even competitors. They leverage content and technology services to create new and improved products at lightening speed. In short, they are worlds apart from traditional publishers.

Early examples of platform businesses such as Amazon, Google, Apple, and Salesforce.com have thrived in difficult, turbulent markets by adopting new ways of thinking about their businesses. Instead of focusing strictly on what they do or sell, they focus on building platform infrastructure, processes, partner networks, and culture to be flexible, resilient, and able to "skate to where the puck is going", to quote Wayne Gretzky.

But platforms aren't just for technology companies. This webinar kicks off the SIIA Publishing Platform program, designed to help publishing executives and their teams rethink their organizations, products, and approaches to doing business, creating more agile, resilient, and competitive platform publishing enterprises.  This introduction to the concept of platform publishing enterprises will explain how traditional information providers can adopt platform tools, thinking, and realize their full potential.

Who Should Attend:

Business executives will learn why platform enterprises are the future and how they can begin the journey to transform their businesses. Technology executives will learn how they can leverage the tools and practices they already use to help drive transformation of the business.
