Managing Director; American Business Media (ABM), a Division of the Software & Information Industry Association

Reports to:  SIIA President                                                                             
Status: Exempt

Location: New York or Washington, DC, preferred

Function:

The Managing Director of ABM (MDA) leads divisional staff in support of the ABM mission, on behalf of the ABM Division Board and membership. The MDA is responsible for the financial performance of ABM, which entails optimizing membership levels and dues levels, developing educational programs and services, and planning and executing an array of in-person and online events. The MDA is the primary point of contact for the ABM Executive Committee and the key liaison between ABM and members of the SIIA staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

*  Leads, on behalf of the ABM Board, the continuing evolution of the ABM Strategy to represent the entire Business Information & Media Industry.  Continually identifies the trends and new business models enabled by the transformation of the industry and consistently updates the ABM strategy, services, thought leadership and membership makeup accordingly and collaboratively with the Board and other key members of the Association.

*  Leads the development, expansion, and increases the revenues of the ABM, which encompasses companies in the B2B media industry, regardless of business model, product format, or delivery platform.  ABM has among its members many technology firms in the business of subscription management, content delivery, advertising services and delivery, and personalization.  Finally, firms in the business of producing live events such as trade shows and webinars are also important constituents within the ABM community.

*   The B2B media industry is in midst of game-changing forces and its new association with SIIA provides ABM with the network and the resources to take advantage of the opportunities present in such an environment.  The MDA of ABM needs to clearly understand the challenges of B2B media, and to actively seek and share actionable ideas among all SIIA members that include software, technology and information solutions that build on the equity of ABM members’ assets.

*  Works in conjunction with the membership and the ABM Divisional Board to manage all activities in all divisional program areas.   Manages the development and adherence to an annual budget and financial plan.

*  Defines the key themes and topic areas relevant to the ABM strategy and the industry transformation and oversees all aspects of Division event program development and marketing – speaker selection and confirmation, promotions, and event budget and logistics.

*  Oversees the definition of industry research and metrics and ensures consistent production and updated of key information and benchmarks relevant to membership.

*  Oversees, in conjunction with the ABM Board and Councils, the establishment of a public policy and regulatory agenda and encourages membership participation.  Ensures priorities, positions, defensive and offensive moves are well coordinated and executed with the SIIA public policy division.  Ensures consistent and clear communication to membership on relevant issues and status and their business impact.

*  Oversees the development of and supervises editorial content for Division web site and press releases, ABM Division newsletters and social media.

*  Helps members stay current on developments across the spectrum of industry activities – content development and delivery, marketing and sales, online media and measurement, and the like.

* Responds to inquiries from members, prospects and press regarding ABM Division activities.

* Assists membership in identifying and recruiting new members and has primary responsibility to retain existing ones and increase revenue and profits overall.

* Organizes and participates in ABM Division Board of Directors activities – works with the ABM Division Chairperson in setting the agenda, meeting dates, and maintains minutes for all meetings.

*  Serves as the liaison between the ABM Division and other SIIA divisions and departments.

*  Provide access and networking opportunities for venture capitalists, investment bankers, private equity firms, lenders, and others to support the transactional aspects of the B2B media industry.

* Represents SIIA and the ABM Division at industry conferences and event.

* Speaks to the media on the importance of the B2B media industry and on key issues affecting the industry.

Minimum Requirements:

Knowledge: Firm understanding of the B2B media and events industry.  Must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and be capable of working effectively with executive management and managers across the industry matrix.

Experience:  At least 10 years’ experience in the media and events industry, with particular expertise in advertising sales and marketing a plus.  Additional experience outside of B2B in an industry that would provide a relevant outside perspective a plus.

Education: College degree. Advanced degree is desirable.

Dimensions: Works closely with Association President and volunteer leadership on ABM activities; ability to supervise immediate staff reports as well as work with other Association staff in the areas of project management and execution.

Financial Scope: Prepares ABM Division Budget and Division event budgets in coordination with SIIA staff
