CCSSO Blue Box: Common Ed Data Standards and Impact on the Application Marketplace
December 6, 2011
State education agencies are looking to transform their current data systems into comprehensive information systems, and are looking to the Common Education Data Standard (CEDS 2.0) to be released in January 2012 to power that system. CEDS 2.0 will include a data dictionary, a logical data model, an XML schema (for data-at-rest), and a set of tools to help states map their current data systems to the new standard. To support their member state agencies in implementation of the standards and information systems, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has developed the Blue Box design as one mechanism.
The common design includes an ETL process to extract elements from a state's existing datasets, transforming those data into the CEDS 2.0 formats and code set values, transforming those values to an XML version of the state's data for storage in that state's "Blue Box." A comparable and compatible Blue Box data warehouse would exist in each state to inform teaching and learning and support reporting and accountability. The webinar will include a presentation of the Blue Box design for implementing CEDS 2.0 and will provide an opportunity for questions and comments around the implications for application developers and content providers.
