Roundtable Discussion

Choose from two topic specific breakout sessions to participate in.

Roundtable

Monetize Your Digital Assets

During this roundtable we'll address the ability to monetize your digital assets, your content, through licensing. Throughout the discussion we will consider both new and traditional vendors, including the pros and cons of licensing with aggregators, syndicators, distributors, web venues, search engines and others. Text, audio, video, blog, tweet streams and other types of content have different properties in the licensing world and each will be up for discussion. Business models will be criticized and evaluated from the perspective of the content creator as well as the vendor. This discussion will cast some light on whether licensing can be a viable revenue stream in the future and for what types of content creators, licensing will be the biggest win. Join us with questions, ideas or just to play devil’s advocate and help create a dynamic discussion.

Social Media: The Next Generation of Online Communities

Next generation online communities are some of the hottest companies right now. Q&A sites like Quora and vertical communities like Stack Exchange and IT Toolbox are attracting millions of visitors each month. More importantly, they are staking out influential positions as social media takes referral traffic from traditional search engines.

In this roundtable, we will discuss the growing influence of online communities and explore how publishers should participate in external communities and consider the pros and cons of developing community sites of their own.

CEO Spotlight - Ahead of the Curve

Kevin Wells has built a career that is your average HR person's nightmare. His rap sheet includes gigs in publishing, advertising, digital media, mobile recognition and content, word of mouth marketing, enormous e-commerce operations and even television,  with clients like HBO, Starbucks, Hearst, Hachette Filipacchi, A&E, Verizon, General Mills, Conde Nast, HP, Anheuser-Busch, Kellogg's, Ralph Lauren, and a host of others. The only thread that really ties them all together is that they are all forms of media in stages of transformation.

Kevin's latest venture, RapidBuyr--his first with a description that fits on the back of a business card--"Think Groupon for SMB," launched a couple of weeks ago. He is one of the co-founders with a group of seasoned executives including Tom and Darr Aley, the CEO and CMO respectively who sold their last company, Generate, to Dow Jones. The act of "buying stuff" is (surprise!)—transforming. The daily deal is here to stay and that behavioral shift is creating some fascinating opportunities for the B2B ecosystem locally and nationally.

Kevin will talk about why martinis, massages and manicures aren't the only interesting thing happening in the daily deals space and how brand new forms of content, a local culture of trust and  "mesh" will help shape that future.

Presenter:

Kevin Wells, Executive Vice President Market Development, RapidBuyr

Real vs. Virtual - The Cage Fight for Social Media

Nothing can be more real than the devastation across Japan, and many trends in social media have been born out of Japan's close knit culture and the integration of new social technologies in media and entertainment. While entertainment-oriented social models in the gaming and music industries are interesting - and a reminder that many social movements that actually work often evolve in pop-culture - the backdrop of the disaster brings into focus the need for virtual tools that have a real impact for the positive in our lives and businesses. Are you lost in the frivolity of social media? How do we reconcile the virtual and real behavior as individuals and organizations? In this presentation you'll find out more about:

  • Social models that work from pop-culture
  • How real and virtual are reconciling into one space
  • How the inter-subjective is a new dimension in customer communication
  • Trans-media and the collapse of media form
  • Transmission of information across networks
