Joe McCambley

Co-Founder, The Wonderfactory

Joe McCambley, co-founder & creative director of The Wonderfactory, is a passionate and devoted student of branding and brand development.

Most recently, Joe held the position of SVP, general manager of the 300-person internal creative organization of America Online. Virtually everything that can be experienced on AOL is conceived, developed, and managed by the Studio and its internal AOL clients.

While at AOL Joe worked with product management and programming to transform AOL from a “walled” community “protected” by its proprietary Rainman technology to an open community enabled by standard Web technologies. Transitioning to standardized technology allowed AOL to cater to the needs of advertisers, and greatly enhanced AOL’s revenues.

Prior to joining AOL, Joe held the position of EVP, chief creative officer at Digitas, one of the world’s preeminent direct response advertising agencies. Digitas develops branded experiences across all consumer touch points and serves as direct agency of record for brands such as American Express, AT&T, General Motors, Federal Express, Delta Airlines, Intercontinental Hotels Group, The New York Times, Barnes & Noble, and Best Buy. While at Digitas, Joe led a team of 400 creative people across offices in Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and London. Digitas was named Interactive Agency of the Year by AdWeek Magazine in 2003.

Before Digitas, Joe served as chief creative officer at Modem Media, the world’s first interactive advertising agency. Joe’s 300 person team developed interactive experiences for such brands as General Motors, Delta Airlines, Citibank, AT&T and AT&T Wireless, Orange, and JC Penney. This was Joe’s second time around at Modem. He originally joined the company in 1994 when there were just twelve employees, and helped to build Modem’s reputation as a creative and strategic force in the interactive industry. Joe conceived and developed the first advertising experience that ever appeared on the Internet in October of 1994. It was a banner that led to an online tour of the world’s best art museums, sponsored by AT&T and developed for the inaugural issue of HotWired Magazine.

Joe originally left Modem to found Thunder House, an interactive advertising agency and web development company headquartered in Cambridge, MA. Under Joe’s presidency, Thunder House was eventually purchased by McCann Erickson Worldwide, a member of the Interpublic Group of Companies. Rapid growth and acquisitions led Thunder House to grow to a network of 14 offices on four continents with 600 employees.
