Challenging the assumption that liberal arts universities are not leaders in technology, Wake Forest University has chosen Cisco Systems to help make its Winston-Salem campus wireless. The school recognized that their prior limited and user-unfriendly system would not satisfy their student body accustomed to easy and consistent internet access. With the help of the Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG), the university established 750 access points. Now, students can connect from anywhere on campus. Read more

Looking to improve district performance, Grant Joint Union High School District partnered with Intel Corporation to develop a 1:1 student laptop program. Additionally, the district aims to extend wireless coverage through the surrounding neighborhood, enabling students to use the internet on those laptops at both school and home. The district is in the process of piloting the program at Martin Luther King Junior High. If the pilot meets expectations, the program will be extended to all schools in the district. Read more

This study examines the algebra achievement of online students at Florida Virtual School in comparison to that of students in school-based algebra classrooms. It found that those students enrolled in the online courses outperformed their classroom-based counterparts. Educational Testing Service (ETS)'s Assessment of Algebraic Understanding was the basis of assessment which led to the conclusion that online algebra courses can be effective and increase access to academic content. This study reviews the effects of distance learning in an effort to better gauge online learning as an option for an effective student learning environment. It examined 14 programs used between 1999 and 2004 and found that distance education can have the same effect on student achievement as traditional instruction. Tested factors included content area, grade level, role of the instructor, and many others. Read more
