Improving Student Knowledge and Skills with Digital Learning Tools: A Study of the Effectiveness of the Cengage MindTap Application

MindTap is an online, personlized learning experience that combines student learning tools into a Learning Path that guides students through their course. In the fall of 2012, two independent research organizations conducted a semester-long study of students and instructors in classes using MindTap as a preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of the product in student growth in knowledge and skills. In a mixed-methods design of 260 students and 13 instructors, the findings indicate that students in classes using MindTap substantially increased their course knowledge and skills. Also, 85% of the instructors interviewed said that students were either very or somewhat engaged with their coursework, largely as a result of their use of MindTap.
