The effect of computer-delivered phonological awareness training on the early literacy skills of students identified as at-risk for reading failure

 Deanne Gale

This experimental study examined the effects of two computer-delivered phonological awareness training programs (Earobics® Step 1 and Lexia Early Reading) on the early literacy skills of kindergarten and first grade students at risk for reading failure. Students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1)Earobics® Step 1, (2) Lexia Early Reading or (3) control. Students in groups 1 and 2 received supplemental interventions during the five-week study period in addition to their regular instruction. The author found positive and statistically significant effects of Earobics® for three DIBELS subtests. Therefore, the Earobics®program was shown to be an effective intervention for improving early literacy skills for students at risk for reading failure. Also see the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) intervention report for further information and research on Earobics®.
