Chief Operating Officer, Center for Research in Security Prices David was coaxed out of early retirement in 1998 to lead CRSP’s revitalization of its historical market databases for common stocks, mutual funds, Treasuries, REITs and research indexes. Invigorated by the opportunity to help CRSP successfully bridge the academic and commercial worlds, David not only helped to solidify CRSP’s position as the premier data source for academic research, he also positioned CRSP as an index innovator with the 2012 introduction of CRSP’s investable indexes. Since its inception in 1960, CRSP has underpinned a vast amount of scholarly research in finance and economics, and has served as a trusted source for deep backtesting and investment benchmarking by practitioners. Today, nearly 450 leading academic institutions based in 35 countries rely on CRSP for its renowned research-quality data, including the U.S. historical equity database that spans 88 years of history. While CRSP has been calculating indexes since the days of the UNIVAC, it has only been since October 2012 that the investable “CRSP Indexes” have been on the industry radar. What was conceived as an extension of the core CRSP academic research databases has evolved into an industry-changing event for index providers. CRSP has licensed 16 of its investable indexes to Vanguard as new benchmarks for certain Vanguard ETFs. The transition to the CRSP Indexes by Vanguard was completed in June 2013 at which time the aggregate asset value for the Vanguard ETF’s benchmarked to CRSP Indexes was approximately $360 billion. |
