FTC Report on Patent Trolls Highlights Damaging Impact on Innovation

Washington, DC (October 7, 2016) - Yesterday, the FTC released its long-awaited report on Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs) and the effect that they have on problems in litigation reform.  The report confirms what the technology industry has long argued--that a disproportionate number of abusive suits are filed by a relatively small number of aggressive entities that own small portfolios of patents, entities the study calls "Litigation PAEs."

“The FTC's study strongly confirms what other reports have shown over the years: that Litigation PAEs engage in nuisance litigation and create a drain on innovation," said Mark MacCarthy, Senior Vice President for Public Policy at the Software and Information Industry Association.  "The FTC has come up with a number of proposals to remedy litigation abuses that deserve serious consideration by Congress.”
