Karen Billings Named 2015 EdTech Digest Visionary
ETIN of SIIA vice president and managing director wins EdTech Award for her tireless work transforming the education industry

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 24, 2015) – Karen Billings, vice president and managing director of the Education Technology Industry Network (ETIN) of the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) has received the 2015 EdTech Digest Leadership Award for the “visionary” category. Each year, the award program recognizes the contributions of leading companies and individuals working to reshape education and create a better future for students.

“Karen is a thought leader, education advocate and industry authority,” said Ken Wasch, SIIA president. “We are honored to have one of the industry’s most respected voices on our team. Karen’s accomplishments and aspirations genuinely embody an education visionary.”

During her time at SIIA, Billings tripled the number of Education Division members and founded the Innovation Incubator and One-to-One Business Profiles programs, which have supported hundreds of education businesses.

“I’m fortunate to work in such an inspirational field,” said Billings. “Learning has transformed so much over the years and is becoming more of a world-wide process, occurring outside of the classroom walls. It’s my privilege to contribute to the vision of education’s future.”

In addition to her work at SIIA, Billings has partnered with ISTE, FETC, SXSWedu, Campus Technology and ASU-GSV to judge startup competitions and has spoken at more than 150 conferences. She has authored four books and has been a trusted resource for UN’s World Bank, trade publications and education associations. In 2012, she earned the educational publishing industry’s highest individual honor by being inducted into the Association of American Publishers Hall of Fame.

Billings received her Doctorate at Columbia University Teachers College, Master’s from the University of Oregon and Bachelor’s from the University of Northern Iowa. With more than 45 years of experience in education technology, Billings taught in the classroom for 12 years and held positions in management, product development, marketing and sales.
