New Online Censorship Executive Order Undermines U.S. Principles, Jeopardizes U.S. Leadership in Innovation, Says SIIA

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 28, 2020) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association for the software, information, digital content, and education technology industries, today issued a statement regarding President Trump’s signing of an executive order regarding online censorship.

SIIA President and CEO, Jeff Joseph, issued the following statement:

“The freedom to express one’s views without government interference is not only the bedrock principle of the First Amendment, but the goose that laid America’s technology golden egg. Our free marketplace of ideas created a world-leading internet industry. Section 230 is part and parcel of that success.  Government efforts to address concerns about censorship on social media platforms or other outlets must be directed at a compelling state interest, narrowly tailored, and conform to existing Executive Branch jurisdictional limits. Maintaining First Amendment breathing space in speech as well as separation of powers preserves our fundamental freedoms and promotes innovation.

The executive order runs counter to these bedrock principles. The U.S. leads the world both in freedom of speech and in online innovation.  We should continue this record.”
