SIIA Welcomes OECD AI Principles

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 23, 2019) – The Software & Information Industry Association, the principal association for the software, information, and digital content industries, considers yesterday’s adoption by 42 countries, including the United States, of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)’s new principles on artificial intelligence (AI) to be very important for promoting AI.

SIIA Senior Vice President for Global Public Policy, Carl Schonander, issued the following statement:

“SIIA is pleased that the OECD’s AI principles are consistent with SIIA’s
issue briefs on Algorithmic Fairness and Ethical Principles for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics.  AI innovation requires significant investment in research, data, skills, and effective governance. The OECD AI principles’ emphasis on AI research and development will positively influence countries to make such investments to the benefit of the global economy.

“We look forward to working with the U.S. Government, other OECD member states, and the OECD Secretariat to implement the principles in a way that maximizes AI’s potential, while ensuring transparency and accountability.”

SIIA has long supported efforts to enhance AI innovation. Earlier this year, we
welcomed President Trump’s Executive Order on artificial intelligence, and this week, we welcomed the U.S. Senate’s introduction of the “Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act (AIIA).”
