Perkins Career & Technical Education Act Reform Will Ensure Education Keeps Pace with

Rapidly Changing Workforce Needs

Washington, D.C. (July 7, 2016) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association representing the software and digital content industries, applauds the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce for today’s passage of the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (HR 5587), which reauthorizes the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.

SIIA, which is a leading national voice advocating for effective use of technology in education, yesterday sent a letter of support to committee and bill sponsors, joining with a large group of organizations urging passage of this reform bill.

Mark MacCarthy, SIIA’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy, issued the following statement:

“As technology rapidly changes, so too do the needs of employers and the workforce – and so too should our technical education programs. The committee-passed bill will strengthen the education community’s connections with industry and biennially assess state and local needs. In doing so, it will  help ensure that career and technical education programs stay current and can quickly and appropriately adapt to changing business demands.

“We commend Chairman Kline (R-MN) and Ranking Member Scott (D-VA), and the bill’s sponsors Glenn Thompson (R-PA) and Katherine Clark (D-MA) for their leadership on this bipartisan legislation. SIIA urges swift passage by the House and also urges the Senate to take up this important legislation.”

In the letter sent yesterday by SIIA, MacCarthy states, “It is critical that our nation’s education and workforce programs support a pipeline of employees with the necessary skills to fill technical positions. Perkins is the principal source of federal funding for CTE and is one of only a few programs that span secondary and postsecondary education while aligning with the needs of business and industry.”
