SIIA Criticizes Australia’s New South Wales Supreme Court Ruling

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 1, 2020) –
The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association for the software, information, and digital content industries, is critical of today’s New South Wales Supreme Court decision that media companies are responsible for defamatory comments users may write when the companies place their content on social media platforms.

SIIA President and CEO, Jeff Joseph, issued the following statement:

“Today’s ruling stands as de-facto censorship which will have a chilling effect on consumers’ ability to access critical news. The broad impacts of this decision will be swift: public comment and criticism will suffer, including criticism of the media itself. Publishers will be hesitant to post content which might be considered controversial for fear of liability suits. And ultimately, those who look to social media platforms for news and information will be disenfranchised.”
