SIIA Encourages Negotiators to Reach an Agreement on NAFTA so North America can Establish
Digital Trade Standards for the Globe
Washington, D.C. (January 22, 2018) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association for the software and digital content industries, encourages the negotiators from the United States, Mexico, and Canada as they start the six round of NAFTA negotiations in Montreal, Canada on January 23, 2018.
SIIA Vice President for Public Policy, Mark MacCarthy, issued the following statement:
“NAFTA partners have a tremendous opportunity to create new rules relevant to the most innovative sectors in all three countries’ economies. New rules on cross-border data flows, non-disclosure requirements for source code and algorithms, and highlighting the role of interoperability mechanisms to transfer data across borders, to mention a few important priorities, are at stake.
“SIIA encourages Ambassador Lighthizer and his team to cross the finish line with their counterparts. We are confident that a final deal will address the goals advocated by SIIA satisfactorily.”
SIIA is an umbrella association representing 800+ technology, data and media companies globally. Industry leaders work through SIIA’s divisions to address issues and challenges that impact their industry segments with the goal of driving innovation and growth for the industry and each member company. This is accomplished through in-person and online business development opportunities, peer networking, corporate education, intellectual property protection and government relations.
