SIIA Joins Letter Opposing Immediate Free Distribution of Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 18, 2019) –
The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association for the software, information, and digital content industries, joined 125 scientific research and publishing organizations in expressing strong opposition to a proposed Administration policy that would mandate immediate free distribution of peer-reviewed journal articles reporting on federally funded research.
SIIA Senior Vice President for Global Public Policy, Carl Schonander, issued the following statement:

“SIIA has signed a letter sent to the Administration opposing a proposed policy that would mandate immediate free distribution of peer-reviewed journal articles reporting on federally funded research. The letter, signed by over 125 leading publishers and non-profit scientific societies, explains how the proposal would jeopardize the intellectual property of American organizations engaged in the creation of high-quality journals and research articles and undermine a relatively new but functioning public-private partnership. Moving to immediate free publication would require taxpayers to pay for continued high-quality publication of research results. However, at this time, US Government science funding agencies do not have all the appropriate mechanisms and resources to continue this dissemination of high-quality research results and publications. If proposed, the policy would undermine American science, research, Intellectual Property, and U.S. global competitiveness. SIIA urges the Administration not to adopt this policy.”
