The Price is Right ... or is it ?

What is a price? In practice there are several variations on the theme. A price could be indicative or it could be executable, it could be on a quote driven market or an order driven market, it could be an evaluated price.  In the world of market data are these categorizations always clear? What are the characteristics of each and how are market data vendors providing service ?  How much is driven by the characteristics of an asset class? With governments pushing as much as possible onto regulated markets are some types of price doomed to imminent extinction – and is that a good or a bad thing? Finally, what part does liquidity play in this discussion.
