The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) joined a coalition in opposing AB 1355, which introduces new restrictions on the collection and use of location data despite California’s existing, robust privacy protections under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). The bill duplicates and complicates established law, creating confusion for consumers and compliance burdens for businesses. By layering new definitions, consent requirements, and notice obligations on top of the CCPA, AB 1355 undermines a unified privacy framework and opens the door to inconsistent enforcement. SIIA supports maintaining the CCPA as the comprehensive standard for protecting Californians’ personal and location data.
