The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA)joins industry leaders in opposing AB 1018, which would impose overly broad, costly, and impractical requirements on all uses of automated decision systems (ADS) in California. While intended to address high-risk use cases, the bill sweeps in low-risk applications and existing systems, exposing businesses—especially small ones—to severe liability for errors without harm. AB 1018 would chill innovation, slow progress on bias reduction, and undermine the development of tools that enhance fairness, transparency, and efficiency. SIIA supports a targeted, risk-based approach to AI regulation that aligns with existing anti-discrimination laws and encourages responsible technology use.
