The following statement can be attributed to Chris Mohr, President, Software & Information Industry Association in regard to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Texas HB 1181.
We are disappointed that the Supreme Court chose to uphold Texas HB 1181, a law that would require commercial websites publishing sexually explicit content to verify the age of users. Protecting children and upholding constitutional rights are not opposing forces. Under the guise of protecting children, the decision has rewritten First Amendment rules to make it easier for the government to restrict ideas and information available to all Americans– the backbone of functioning markets and a functioning democracy.
There is significant work ahead for those that support the American principle of free speech and we look forward to working with the broad coalition of those that do.
