SIIA Joins Organizations in Requesting Extension of Section 232 Comment Period

The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) joined a broad coalition of industry associations in a letter to the Department of Commerce urging an extension of the public comment period for its Section 232 investigation into imports of semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The letter requests a minimum 30-day extension—moving the deadline from May 7 to at least June 7, 2025—as well as the addition of a public hearing at the end of the comment period.

Given the investigation’s sweeping implications for trade, national security, and U.S. supply chains, the signatories emphasize the need for adequate time and public engagement. The letter highlights that the inquiry overlaps with other major policy initiatives and could significantly impact thousands of companies across the economy. More time and transparency, the letter argues, would help ensure that Commerce receives thorough, constructive input from the business community.
