The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) has joined a coalition of public interest organizations and trade associations in opposing Maryland’s HB 1407, a bill that closely mirrors the federal NO FAKES Act. In a letter to the Maryland House Economic Matters Committee, the coalition outlines key concerns, including the bill’s potential to undermine federal copyright law, impose undue liability on online service providers, and infringe on free speech rights. The letter also notes that Maryland’s existing common law already provides protections against unauthorized commercial use of a person’s likeness, making the adoption of HB 1407 unnecessary.
