Irresponsible ESG  - from a Responsible Investment Officer?

Stuart Kirk, HSBC Asset management’s head of Responsible Investing shocked the investment world when he said that the ESG conversation was irrelevant in the context of short and medium-term investment products. Will there be more Stuart Kirks?  Will companies “walk the ESG talk”, or figure out ways to serve their (profit-first) shareholders at the expense of ESG principles?

    • Does the argument have any merit that investment duration / product horizon conflicts with measuring/qualifying ESG impact?
    • What does the data show?  What fund flows are we seeing among institutional and retail investors between traditional and ESG funds?
    • Will companies create “good ESG / bad ESG” entities? Is this “ethical” or opportunistic?
    • Are more regulatory mandates needed?

Erica Hall, ESG Analyst, Morningstar

Kate Turner, Global Head of Responsible Investment, First Sentier

5:00 - 5:25 p.m.

Your bond sent a message; it has a new owner.

The majority of trading in equities and FX markets has moved off screens to algos.  Can Fixed Interest/Income make the move to automated trading in Asia/Pacific?

    • Which issuer segments have the liquidity: foreign / regional treasuries, swaps, CDOs, CDSs?
    • Has electronic trading increased costs by requiring participation in multiple venues?
    • Who is leading the way; is alogithimic pricing making feeds more complex and latency sensitive?
    • How is this changing the market data offerings from fixed income trading platforms; are we seeing/can we expect "trade fragmentation”?

Emily Turner, Head of Market Data, Yieldbroker,

Ray Anderson, Head of Australia and New Zealand, ICE Data Services
